A group of students are trying to bring attention to the idea about climate change. Six riders have set out on a 22-day, 5,400 mile journey across the U.S. They started in Washington D.C. on March 31, and they will finish up in their hometown of Seattle, Washington on Earth day, April 22. With the help of Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels, the students will stop in various cities to talk about the importance of protecting the environment.
“I think people should care. It’s a big deal. It’s not something small. It affects everybody around the world,” 15-year-old rider Ally Stariha tells Newschannel 32.
The riders stopped at chase street elementary school in Athens this afternoon, where they helped kindergarteners plant a Yellowwood tree.
“I think what we’re doing here is reminding people that without clean air and water, it’s very difficult for our communities to survive and remain vital and sustainable,” says Athens-Clarke County Mayor Heidi Davidson.
The student riders range in age from ten to 18. They plan on staying the night in Atlanta. Then, they will venture to Alabama in the morning.
