Like much of California, San Francisco got its start when a Spanish exploration party, led by Don Gaspar de Portolà arrived on November 2, 1769.
The California Gold Rush brought a flood of prospectors who gathered in San Francisco, raising the population from 1,000 in 1848 to 25,000 by December 1849
On April 18, 1906, a major earthquake struck San Francisco collapsing buildings & igniting a fire that spread across the city, burning out of control for several days.
