Significant City History

In 1851, gold was discovered at Rich Gulch, bringing settlers
and signaling the beginning of Ashland in January 1852.

In December 1887, Portland, Oregon and San Francisco,
California were joined by rail at Ashland.

Ashland is well-known for its annual Oregon Shakespeare
Festival, which brings thousands of visitors  every year.
The festival has grown from a summer outdoor festival in the
1930s to a season which stretches from February to October.
