Significant City History

The settlement of Richmond was laid out in April, 1737.

In 1775, Patrick Henry delivered his famous, Give me Liberty Give me Death, speech in St. John's Church in Richmond.

Thomas Jefferson writes Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, which was the basis for the separation of church and state.

Ulysses S. Grant & the Union Army captured Richmond, & six days later, Robert E. Lee's retreating Army of Northern Virginia surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House.
