| Significant City History |
|
The history of Phoenix as a city begins with Jack Swilling, an American Civil War veteran who had come west to seek wealth in the 1850s.
The coming of the railroad in the 1880s was the first of several important events that revolutionized the economy of Phoenix. Merchandise now flowed into the city by rail instead of wagon. Phoenix became a trade center with its products reaching eastern and western markets.
On February 14, 1912, under President William Howard Taft, Phoenix became the capital of the newly formed state of Arizona

* Completing a greenhouse gas emissions inventory and Climate Action Plan for city operations * Water Conservation Program: Per capita water use dropped by more than 20% the last 20 years * 95 percent of city buildings retrofitted with energy-efficient lighting * Partners with local utilities to make CFLs available to residents for little to no cost * All city facilities constructed with 2006 bond funds are being built to LEED standards (currently, eleven are either completed or under design/construction) * Since 2000, nine green fire stations have been built * First phase of 20-mile light rail section opening in December 2008 an additional 37 miles has been approved and funded * Over 20,000 acres of parks, open space and mountain preserves * City of Phoenix Sustainability Report http://phoenix.gov/sustainability/ |
