3-31-08 And We're Off Print

When I woke up I started freaking out because I didn’t know when our wake up call time was. Getting four hours of sleep does that to a person. Apparently Thomsen came into our room to check on us and instead of saying we had to get up, he said go back to bed. Of course we went back to bed and then woke up at nine to pack our bags and get ready to go.

When I got downstairs the first thing I noticed was that this wasn't Seattle.  After all those damn hours of working on this trip we actually made it.
Of course the next thing that struck me was that it was raining, and we have to ride in it.

We loaded the truck and headed out for our first stop, T.C Williams High. It was an interesting first ride, considering that it was the second time I had been on my new bike, but thankfully I didn’t fall over! However Sydney did! We were on a gravel path and she made a sharp turn which made her fall. I almost fell, but my stealthy skills prevented this from happening.

When we arrived at T.C Williams High, there was a group of about 30 people waiting for us. Immediately I was embarrassed. Having all of these people clap and cheer for us was a little bit overwhelming. We went inside the school to be greeted by mayor Euille and other City and School District officials. Mayor Euille gave a wonderful speech and afterward, principal Mel Riddle, gave us a tour of the school.

To put it simply the school was amazing!  It was really impressive.  Its called a "Green School" and it has sod and gardens on the roof, state of the art environmental features and much of the curriculum is tied into the schools environmental focus. I loved the outside of the school, but the inside was even better. The schools design was really cool. I liked the way each classroom was designed to be eco friendly and how everything looked organized. What impressed me the most was their green roof! I loved that instead of leaving it like a normal roof they made it look like a huge garden and that they use it for biology and cooking classes.  It's a much better school than anything Ive seen in Seattle.

Of course it was also very cool to learn that the movie Remember the Titans was actually filmed at the old high school.

We left the school with medals and a lot more knowledge about eco schools.

Our next stop was South Boston. Everything was going pretty well, but traffic was awful and then we hit a thunderstorm and Thomsen pulled the riders off the road.  I've never seen it rain so hard. We got stuck in it for a couple of hours, but thankfully the car was pretty comfortable, even though it was a full car.

By the time it quit raining we only had time for one group to be out on the road before dark, and they were going really fast considering we only got 4 hours of sleep last night.

It was really creepy as we drove to the cabins because it got dark really quickly and it began to rain. When we arrived at the cabins, it was pitch black and no one could see anything. We quickly unloaded all of the stuff and headed off to our cabins.  Thomsen and Drew said they saw a white deer, but none of them believed them until Paul showed us the pictures they took. What an absolutely beautiful animal.  Thomsen said its going to bring us good luck, but personally Im just hoping for a good night's sleep.

The cabins were very nice, but still had a rugged feel to them. We had previously gone to the grocery store, but due to lack of information we didn’t know if we had an oven or microwave, so we stuck to the simple stuff. The dinner was great though. We had pasta, sausage, and vegetables which all tasted really well. Tyrone did a fabulous job cooking, but the adults didn’t luck out so well. They burnt their frozen pizza. ! After everyone ate we all attacked the chocolate cake that we found in the refrigerator. It was delicious!

The night ended with Thomsen and Paul coming in to lay out our jobs for the trip.  Naturally Thomsen told everybody to take notes, and naturally not everyone did.  Arielle and I are in charge of making sure we get the event information updated, and Im in charge of assigning people to clean the support vehicles.  Jacob, Tim and Tyrone are in charge of the daily trip information that has to go up on the website, and Sydney is in charge of morning wake up calls.   The problem with Thomsen is he goes over the same thing again and again, so, I think we all kind of tuned him out.

At any rate, now that everyone has left I’m going to take a refreshing shower and go to bed.
