| 4-01-08 It’s ok I’m Diabetic |

Today I’m going to change the amount of Lantus (insulin that works as my base line) I take because I’m going to be riding and if I keep it the same, my blood sugar will drop and I will be riding like I’m drunk. This is not fun or safe for me and can stress out the people with me. I check my blood sugar before and after I ride. My blood sugar has to be above 150ch right before I ride because it drops about 100mg each ride. When I end a ride, I check my blood sugar to see how far it has dropped and if I need to eat. It’s really easy. I hope this inspires people with diabetes that you can take on crazy stuff like this. Diabetes doesn’t need to limit you. I considered adding my motto to my web page saying “It’s ok I’m diabetic.” Today it looks like I'm finally going to get a long ride with my clip on shoes. I thought it would be hard and I would fall at least once since it was my first time, but I didn't fall at all and I was so happy. On the other hand Jacob fell 3 times and I didn’t so BOO YAA him and his superb ability to stay upright, maybe he broke a spoke in his head. Two of his crashes crept up on him when he was stopped. Another when he took his eyes off the road. We rode to South Boston Elementary where they gave us a wonderful home made breakfast. Thomsen told us to put our plates in the trash, even though the mayor said we did not need to. Thomsen was right; we should have put our plates in the trash anyways. After we ate we broke up into groups and visited classrooms and talked with the kids and teachers about what we're doing. We talked about where we are going, which cities we chose, and what our ride is about. All the students were great and I enjoyed talking to them. I don’t like to talk very much but I felt like I had to try so I did. It was ok and I didn't feel embarrassed. After our school meeting we began riding. This is our first day of shift riding as Thomsen calls it. I don’t know where he came up with that name but he drives the truck so I guess he's the boss. We got in quite a bit of riding before it started raining and I did ok. I rode a lot and my blood sugar was good. |
